Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province is characterised by a rapidly increasing youth population ready to enter in the labor force. This is creating a demographic transition which will create a “youth bulge” – a phenomenon considered to be one-time window of opportunity for a nation’s economic development. However, if this opportunity is not availed, large cohorts of illiterate, unskilled and jobless youth will become a perfect recipe for social and political instability.
At present, approximately 0.4 million youth enter into the labor force every year in KP and the situation will carry on well beyond 2025. To harness the power of the youth bulge, KP needs to invest in its youth by giving them need and demand-based quality skills training. This will enable them to seek wage or self-employment, ultimately contributing towards poverty reduction and economic growth in the province.
